Day 2.... three weeks later

Saturday of our trip was a beautiful spring day.  Not super hot, but warm enough for light jackets and playing outside all day.  We headed to the Western North Carolina Nature Center in the morning.

Trey's favorite part was the cleaning stall in the barn.  He loved sweeping, pushing the wheelbarrow and getting away from the animals!

All 4 kiddos in the barn.

Then the kids decided to hold hands.  Of course Charlotte didn't want to hold her brother's hand so she had to move to the other side of the group to hold Sadie's hand!

The otter exhibit had this slide for the kids to enjoy.

Lydia was the only one brave enough to actually pet and brush the animals.

Asheville Vacation Day 1

How's that for a pretty original title?

The first full day in Asheville the weather was still a little cool and windy so opted for an inside activity.  In fact, we drove through parts of a freak snow storm where Blacksburg got 4-5 inches of snow the day before.  Asheville has an amazing kid play place, Play Mountain Lodge, where we took the kids.  I must say I love vacationing with people who have the same goal as me: Play with the kids as hard as you can so they take really long naps and go to bed early, leaving you plenty of time to relax on vacation!

Before we left for the play place the kids were rocking their sunglasses!

They all look so excited to go play! Ha!

Trey's first stop was the train table.  It had so many more cars and tunnels than his at home.

Charlotte loved this canoe!

Charlotte and her friend Lydia. (In my original post I put Sadie.  Not sure what I was thinking...sorry girls, I know who you are!)   I loved watching them play together.

Charlotte loves any buttons!

This place had slides all over.  Trey was obsessed with the slides!

Trey spent about an hour climbing up this castle thing and going down this slide.  He would come out so fast he would slide onto the floor and bounce up!

Towards the end of the visit both kids got enough courage to get into the bouncy house.  They had one just for ages 4 and under and so it was perfect for them to jump around without the craziness of the "big kids."

After naptime their friend Sadie and her parents arrived.  The girls had so much fun playing doctor together.  We had three 2 year old girls there.  They got along so well and were a delight to watch!
Lydia checking Charlotte's heart.

All three girls together.  Two years old is such a fun age!

Spring Break

Last week for the end of Spring Break we took a wonderful trip to Asheville, N.C.  We vacationed with two of my college roommates and their families.  Really, these people are like extended family.  I loved watched our kids play together, and getting to remember what it was like to live together (only 8 years ago no one woke us up at 6 am for breakfast!).

We had such a great time and I was so sad that our camera's memory card got messed up on the trip, so I am on the mercy of phone cameras and one friend's amazing photos that he graciously shared.

Here we are before we left on Sunday.

I plan to go through each day and upload photos to remember this trip.  I definitely think this should be an annual event!

Pirate Party

Trey has wanted a "Jake and the Never Land Pirates" party ever since Charlotte's Minnie Mouse party.  I have never actually seen the show, so I used pinterest as my guide to create a fun pirate party.

I made my first birthday pennant banner.  It was super easy and I figure the red and blue colors can be used for future birthdays.

We used Trey's pirate toys for decorations and I fell in love with burlap while setting up the decorations.

Jay made really cute food signs on the computer that we printed out for all the snacks.  Totally unnecessary, but I liked having them anyways :)

When the kids first arrived they picked up pixie dust (glitter in small jewelry pouches with string to hang around their necks) and red headbands like Jake to wear.

For a craft, they each got to decorate a treasure chest.  I had foam letters that spelled out their names and jewels for them to stick onto their chest.

Most of the kids decorated the outside of their treasure chests, but Trey kept sticking all the jewels inside his chest to be his treasure!

While some were still finishing the treasure chest,  the bean bag toss board that Papa made for Charlotte's birthday was a big hit!

After some snacks, the kids went outside for games.  It kept drizzling off and on all morning so we set up the outside activities on the covered front porch.  We put sand in our water table and hid gold doublooms all in the sand.  The kids dug for the treasure to put inside their treasure box.  I don't have a picture of this, but Jay's parents brought over a board and two cement blocks to set the board onto.  We called it "Walk the Plank" and the kids walked across the board.

Charlotte decided she needed more snacks after playing outside!

Trey got so many wonderful presents. He really doesn't need any help opening presents anymore, just help remembering to look at the card first so he can thank the giver.

Finally it was time for cupcakes and ice cream. Trey wanted to sit with his friends for the cupcakes and enjoyed everyone singing to him.

Charlotte had lots of attention from her big cousins at the party.  Jacob was very patient feeding Charlotte some of his ice cream.

I made up these loot bags with pirate goodies.  The kids got a spy glass, eye patch, gold doublooms, and pirate tattoos.  They also got to take home their pixie dust, headbands, and treasure chest.  My kids have been playing pirates with all the leftover party stuff ever since the party ended!

Happy 4th Birthday!

Today Trey turns 4 years old.  Each year I try to write about the kid's interests and changes throughout the year.  I decided to interview Trey about his favorite things right now.

What is your favorite color? Orange

What is your favorite toy? my screwdriver

What is your favorite food? cereal

What is your favorite tv show? Yo Gabba Gabba

What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch? (Trey just stared at me what I asked this question so I prompted him with what is your favorite thing to eat for lunch at Grandma and Grandpa's house? ) white bread

What is your favorite outfit? my big brother shirt

What is your favorite game? Stick the tail on the donkey!

What is your favorite snack? I don't think you should ask that question right now. I already talked about my favorite food.

What is your favorite animal? a pig

What is your favorite song? The itsy bitsy spider

Who is your best friend? Charlotte said, "me, it's Charlotte!" so then of course Trey had to say,  No, it's my cousin Jacob.

What is your favorite thing for breakfast? Cheerios

What is your favorite drink? milk

What is your favorite thing to play outside? dig for treasure

What is your favorite holiday? Christmas

What is your favorite thing to take to bed? Daddy (Trey doesn't like to sleep with any toys, special blankets or stuffed animals, but he loves for Daddy to lay with him for a few minutes before he falls asleep).

What do you want to be when you grow up? A giant

The last question totally cracks me up.  Trey talks about how he is growing big and strong and I don't think we have ever talked about jobs adults have other than where people work.  We say that Mommy and Daddy work at school and he knows Papa works at a church, but I guess in his super literal mind "grows up" means when he gets to be really big, not when he has a job.

Easter Sunday

Easter is a busy day around here with Jay singing in three church services in the morning.  We all drive together to church so everyone has to be up, dressed, and fed to be out the door by 7:00.

Jay and I got up early and got ready.  Charlotte was her bright and cheerful self at 6:00 am so we didn't even have to wake her up to get dressed for church!  She was very happy to put on her Easter dress and then go downstairs to check out her Easter basket.

Trey had to be woken up, but he when he remembered his Easter basket downstairs he was quick to get dressed.  The kids loved their shovels and the m & m's inside the Easter eggs.  The first thing he said after looking at everything was, "The Easter Bunny forgot my jelly beans."  I tried to explain that the Easter Bunny remembered he did not like jelly beans, so she put m & m's in his eggs instead.

The kids were willing to let me take one picture of them in their Easter clothes before we headed off to church.  We pulled down the driveway at 7:01 am, which I think is pretty good!

At the 8:00 service Jay sings and then I help with the kids.  Our Sunday School class doesn't have class on Easter, but instead each couple volunteers for one hour in the children's area as a way to help meet a need on Easter morning and to meet new families that may be visiting the church on Easter.

We came back from church after lunch and had a restful afternoon together. Both kids took super long naps while Jay and got ready for Trey's birthday party the next day!
